Sr. Director, Engineering Tools and Community of Practice

Best Buy is seeking a Sr. Director, Engineering Tools and Community of Practice to lead an exciting new capability that is critical to our Digital & Technology transformation. The successful leader will have accountability for two critical functions: (1) building best-in-class engineering tools and processes to empower teams to quickly deploy new features and capabilities and (2) building and leading a cross-functional engineering community focusing on training and development, career pathing and advancement, building talent pipelines, and setting and raising the talent bar.

This highly visible leader must have a demonstrated history of working cross-functionally to bring engineers of all types and levels together to create shared vision and objectives and deliver products, processes and services for use by internal customers.

The leader will also be an acknowledged top-talent engineering leader with a with demonstrated successes building and leading strong teams, implementing modern engineering practices, designing and building applications following twelve-factor app methodology, and deep knowledge of modern software design patterns. The leader will specifically have a demonstrated history of designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines in a large-scale software delivery organization.

Position responsibilities include:
  • Create a vision and roadmap for engineering tools including investment needs and measurement methodology to track progress and value created
  • Building, managing and leading a team focused on delivering best-in-class engineering tools and processes that enable engineering teams to deliver quickly through automation and re-use
  • Initiate the Engineering Community of Practice (COP) focusing on creating strong relationships with engineers (leaders and individual contributors) to create a council of advisors to provide inputs on the objectives of the COP
  • Utilize the Engineering COP to inform the engineering tools vision and roadmap and to gain adoption of the tooling and processes as they are rolled out
  • Lead creation and ensure maintenance of the engineering job families
  • Lead development of talent pipelines from multiple sources ensuring the focus on entry-level and experienced resources is aligned to the broader talent strategy of the Digital & Technology transformation
  • Lead creation and implementation of engineering training and development curriculum and career pathing
  • Establish engineering talent bar for various engineering disciplines and levels and implement a process to apply the talent bar to hiring and promotion across the Digital & Technology organization
Basic Requirements:
  • 14+ years of experience in Technology Engineering or Architecture or combination of the two
  • 10+ years of experience in a leadership role with direct reports and people management responsibilities
  • 6+ years of experience managing and being accountable for budgets
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in IT, Computer Science, business or related field
  • 8+ years of experience building and leading engineering teams
  • 8+ years of experience designing and delivering software
  • 5+ years of experience designing and implementing engineering tools and processes including CI/CD pipelines in a large-scale software delivery organization
  • Proactive and dynamic - able to identify and resolve issues quickly
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities in parallel
  • Strong customer service orientation and a bias for action
